Hungarian & English Translation

Isten, áldd meg a magyartO Lord, bless the nation of Hungary

Jó kedvvel, bőséggel,With your grace and bounty

Nyújts feléje védő kart,Extend toward it your guarding arm

Ha küzd ellenséggel;During strife with its enemies

Bal sors akit régen tép,Long torn by ill fate

Hozz rá víg esztendőt,Bring upon it a time of relief

Megbűnhődte már e népThis nation has suffered for all sins

A múltat s jövendőt!Of the past and of the future!

Őseinket felhozádYou brought our ancestors up

Kárpát szent bércére,Over the Carpathians’ holy peaks

Általad nyert szép hazátBy You was won a beautiful homeland

Bendegúznak vére.For Bendegúz’s sons

S merre zúgnak habjaiAnd wherever flow the rivers of

Tiszának, Dunának,The Tisza and the Duna

Árpád hős magzatjaiÁrpád our hero’s descendants

Felvirágozának.Will root and bloom.

Értünk Kunság mezeinFor us on the plains of the Kuns

Ért kalászt lengettél,You ripened the wheat

Tokaj szőlővesszeinIn the grape fields of Tokaj

Nektárt csepegtettél.You dripped sweet nectar

Zászlónk gyakran plántáládOur flag you often planted

Vad török sáncára,On the wild Turk’s earthworks

S nyögte Mátyás bús hadátAnd under Mátyás’ grave army whimpered

Bécsnek büszke vára.Vienna’s “proud fort.”

Hajh, de bűneink miattHajh, but for our sins

Gyúlt harag kebledben,Anger gathered in Your bosom

S elsújtád villámidatAnd You struck with Your lightning

Dörgő fellegedben,From Your thundering clouds

Most rabló mongol nyilátNow the plundering Mongols’ arrows

Zúgattad felettünk,You swarmed over us

Majd töröktől rabigátThen the Turks’ slave yoke

Vállainkra vettünk.We took upon our shoulders.

Hányszor zengett ajkainHow often came from the mouths

Ozman vad népénekOf Osman’s barbarian nation

Vert hadunk csonthalmainOver the corpses of our defeated army

Győzedelmi ének!A victory song!

Hányszor támadt tenfiadHow often did your own son agress

Szép hazám, kebledre,My homeland, upon your breast,

S lettél magzatod miattAnd you became because of your own sons

Magzatod hamvvedre!Your own sons’ funeral urn!

Bújt az üldözött, s feléThe fugitive hid, and towards him

Kard nyúlt barlangjában,The sword reached into his cave

Szerte nézett s nem leléLooking everywhere he could not find

Honját e hazában,His home in his homeland

Bércre hág és völgybe száll,Climbs the mountain, descends the valley

Bú s kétség mellette,Sadness and despair his companions

Vérözön lábainál,Sea of blood beneath his feet

S lángtenger fölette.Ocean of flame above.

Vár állott, most kőhalom,Castle stood, now a heap of stones

Kedv s öröm röpkedtek,Happiness and joy fluttered,

Halálhörgés, siralomGroans of death, weeping

Zajlik már helyettek. Now sound in their place.

S ah, szabadság nem virulAnd Ah! Freedom does not bloom

A holtnak véréből,From the blood of the dead,

Kínzó rabság könnye hullTorturous slavery’s tears fall

Árvánk hő szeméből!From the cold eyes of the orphans!

Szánd meg Isten a magyartRedeem, O Lord, the Hungarians

Kit vészek hányának,Who are tossed by waves of danger

Nyújts feléje védő kartExtend toward it your guarding arm

Tengerén kínjának. On the sea of its misery

Bal sors akit régen tép,Long torn by ill fate

Hozz rá víg esztendőt,Bring upon it a time of relief

Megbűnhődte már e népThey who have suffered for all sins

A múltat s jövendőt!Of the past and of the future!
